The need to constantly improve upon artificial intelligence in games has beckoned man to continuously expand the limits of his creativity and scale beyond what is possible. Thus it has enabled Man to not only master the concept called intelligence but also provides a way to test and value that mastery. As a better answer to ascertain the degree of superiority of both artificial and human intelligence is the creation of games to test AI. Man's intelligence is pitted against artificial computer programs that enable his validation of his worthiness. AI now spans an industry accounting for dollars in billions each year.
Modern computer games have prompted designers to create programs simulating human behavior. Though it does not represent original thought, simulation is the correct starting place for examining the computer games' intelligence development. The concept of "role playing" involves presentation of a detailed environment that involves application of real world reasoning for solving problems. These environments are created with intense care for the preservation of life-like situations and actions on the computer's behalf. Exploring of the environment by the player continues until he encounters a computer-controlled problem when he must start applying his wits and intelligence. 3D games provide more active interaction. Wolfenstein released by id Software in 1992 provided a breakthrough in game play. Players forced through a maze representing a Nazi castle while shooting the enemies. Though its AI was weak, it kick started the genre of the 3D shooter. Soon fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street fighter were introduced. The concept was the competing of human and computer controlled characters. The challenge was intense as the computer very well adjusts to the position and attack strategy of a player.
Advanced AI has been implemented by complex hardware like the N64 that creates "artificial life" that enables emerging of complex behavior from simpler rules and is thus the antithesis of AI. The victory of IBM Blue's victory over chess great Garry Kasparov justifies the height that AI has attained. Playstation from Sony and Saturn from Sega provide intellectual stimulation than never before and have been an instant hit with the younger generation.
